Transfer Credit, Consortium, and Co-Registration

Alternative student registration options are available to current students. Students may elect to take courses through co-registration with other Marian University sites, through other colleges and universities that have a consortium partnership with Marian University, or through transfer work at other colleges and universities. Advance approval is required for all the options.

Review detailed information, policies, and links/instructions regarding each of these options below by opening the related item in the accordion menu.

Understanding the Options

Several key differences between taking a course through co-registration or a consortium (CUE or Acadeum) versus taking a transfer course are summarized below.

Topic

Co-registration or Consortium Course

Transfer Course

Application and Approval

  • Student must follow proper procedures to request approval from the Marian University Registrar’s Office.
  • Marian University will facilitate the student’s registration in the course if approved.
  • The course will not break Marian University’s residency requirement (e.g. course may be taken during the last 30 credit hours toward the bachelor’s degree or last 15 credits toward the associate’s degree).
  • Student must follow proper procedures to request approval from the Marian University Registrar’s Office
  • Student must independently apply to the transfer institution as a guest student and register for the course.
  • A transfer course cannot be taken during the last 30 credit hours toward the bachelor’s degree or last 15 credits toward the associate’s degree without special approval.

Billing and Financial Aid

  • Billing will take place through the student’s Marian University account. Financial aid may apply.
  • Special Note: When Acadeum courses are being used to help the student reach a full-time enrollment status of 12 credits (example: nine credits at Marian and three enrolled credits through Acadeum) the student will be full-time for the purposes of federal and state aid, but institutional aid will be prorated.
  • Student will be billed by the transfer institution. Marian University financial aid does not apply.

Credit

  • Students who receive a passing grade receive institutional credit (e.g. appears on the transcript like a Marian University course and not a transfer course). Some majors may require a higher grade for certain courses.
  • The final grade will calculate into the Marian University GPA.
  • Student must receive a minimum grade of C- for the course to be transferable. Some majors may require a higher grade for certain courses.
  • Student must have an official transcript sent to Marian University after completion.
  • The final grade will not calculate into the Marian University GPA.

Test Credit

Marian University accepts test credits from Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College Level Examination Program (CLEP)*. Students must have an official score report sent to the Office of the Registrar to be considered/evaluated for credit. Credit may be awarded according to the following equivalency charts:

Students who are expecting to receive test credit should check the Test Scores tab in their MUHUB under the Other Tests section to see when scores have been received. Any credit awarded will then be listed in the Non-term Courses section at the beginning of their MUHUB Timeline. Students should reach out to their advisor if they see they have been awarded test credit for courses that they have already registered for in the upcoming semester, so that schedule adjustments can be made if needed.

*For more information about Marian University’s CLEP policy, please refer to Undergraduate Catalog of Programs. Restrictions apply.

Dual Credit

Marian University accepts college credit from students who took classes through a regionally accredited college while they are in high school. Students must send their official college transcript directly from the college/university that they received credit from. Once their final transcript is received, we will award credit based on our transfer policy.
