I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Rachel Shockley regarding her journey into the medical field. Her dual interest in clinical practice and academics took root at a young age, inspired by her mother, who served as both a nurse and a teacher. A self-described "country girl" with an inquisitive mind, Dr. Shockley’s passion for medicine led her to DePauw University for her undergraduate studies, followed by a master’s degree from Indiana University. She ultimately pursued her medical education at A.T. Still University in Kirksville to start her journey as a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO).
Upon earning her DO degree, Dr. Shockley completed her residency at Indianapolis’s Community Hospital East. Her journey continued at the University of North Carolina for her fellowship, where she focused on patient care, utilized osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT), and deepened her expertise in obstetrics. During her time there, she was mentored by Marian’s very own Clif Knight, MD! Additionally, she holds a faculty development fellowship in family medicine from UNC Chapel Hill and a program director fellowship from the National Institute for Program Director Development. She was a program director for eight years; this role allowed her to fulfill a lifelong interest in teaching and service that began in her childhood, combining her clinical expertise with her passion for mentoring the next generation of physicians.
In her family medicine practice, Dr. Shockley prioritizes continuity of care, valuing the long-term relationships built with patients throughout their lives. As an osteopathic physician, she views healthcare through a holistic lens and frequently incorporates Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). She has found that specific techniques, such as HVLA (High Velocity Low Amplitude), are particularly effective and well-received by her younger patients. For Dr. Shockley, her osteopathic background is a fundamental part of her professional identity that has opened unique doors in her career.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Shockley finds balance through various hobbies. She is a passionate gardener with a particular love for growing asparagus. She also enjoys traveling and reading.
