Biomedical Engineering Major

Why major in Biomedical Engineering at Marian University?

Biomedical engineers have an immense impact on human health and quality of life worldwide.

  • Pacemakers, artificial heart valves, and insulin pumps help millions of people live longer and better lives.

As a biomedical engineer, you can develop the next generation of medical devices that help people survive and thrive.

  • MRI, CT scans, and ultrasounds help doctors diagnose and cure injuries and diseases.

As a biomedical engineer, you can implement technologies that aid doctors in helping millions of people when they get hurt or sick.

  • Robotic limbs, joint replacements, and other prosthetics and implants help people who have lost limbs, undergone amputation, or require replacements due to wear and tear.

Biomedical engineers work on devices that can be adapted to a patient's unique circumstances, improving their quality of life.

  • Smartwatches, wearable sensors, therapeutic interventions, and vitals monitors give people a deep understanding of their health and medicine on the go.

Biomedical engineers are key participants in developing products in the health-related wearables industry.

A biomedical engineering degree will equip you with the knowledge, technical skills, and soft skills you need to make an impact on human health. Doing it at Marian University will allow you to maintain a strong moral compass and pursue impact informed by the Franciscan Values.

ABET Accreditation

The Biomedical Engineering program is seeking an ABET accreditation visit under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Bioengineering and Biomedical and Similarly Named Engineering Programs by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Advisory Board

The biomedical engineering program assembled the Biomedical Engineering External Advisory Board (EAB). The EAB serves as the main connection between the program and the prospective employers of our graduates. The board consists of a diverse group of members from industry and academia with experience in relevant biomedical engineering and medical education. The board provides guidance on continuously improving the biomedical engineering program to better serve graduates and industrial partners. The board also serves as a resource for academic/industrial partnerships. The current board members are:

  1. Camron Dawes: Senior Field Application Consultant, Roche
  2. Tucker Endersbe: Consulting Engineer II, Process Alliance
  3. Dr. Julia Hum: Associate Professor of Physiology and Program Director for M.S. in Biomedical Sciences at Marian University
  4. Nithya Kasireddy: Chief Executive Officer, Levisonics Inc.
  5. Dr. Chien-Chi Lin: Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University
  6. Elizabeth Miller: Process Engineer, MilliporeSigma
  7. Dr. Sumathilatha Sakthi Velavan: Associate Professor of Anatomy and Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Pathology at Marian University

Facilities

Instructor explains medical equipment beside a hospital bed in a simulation lab while a group of students listens. The Witchger Engineering Building (WEB) is a four-story, 78,000 sq. ft. facility specifically designed to provide students with the learning environment, equipment, and technology they need to succeed in their studies. The design concept includes a vision of interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on experience. The building is not divided into wings for different programs or departments; instead, it fosters contact and collaboration among all programs in the school. The building is both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Fitwel (an evidence-based building certification system designed to optimize building design and operations to support human health and well-being) certified in the State of Indiana. The Witchger Engineering Building has received the 2024 Merit Design Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Indiana ACEC and the 2024 Indy Chamber’s Monumental Award.

Of the space available in the building, approximately 1173 sq. ft. are dedicated to the biomedical engineering program laboratories and controlled by the biomedical engineering faculty. Classrooms, general engineering labs, conference rooms, and office spaces are shared among all the engineering programs in the Witchger School of Engineering. Most of our spaces are equipped with smart AV technology to facilitate multimodal learning.

Here, students have access to:

  • Makerspaces
Equipped with a large range of advanced 3D printers and other rapid prototyping equipment for students.
  • Dedicated teaching labs
BME students will explore engineering fundamentals in action throughout the curriculum in our teaching labs.
  • Collaboration spaces
Conference rooms, project spaces, and our Collaboratorium are among the many spaces available to students for working with peers and external partners.
  • Study rooms
Group study rooms, study areas, lounge areas, and more for students to use - to study or to take a break.
  • Project labs
Large workspaces with movable tables offer students room to design and prototype various projects.
  • Machine shops
Manufacturing space with state-of-the-art machining equipment that increases the capability for students to develop sophisticated prototypes in materials like wood, plastics, and metals.
