Marian University celebrated so many exciting changes and updates at this years BOLD Gala along with our amazing honorees who give so much to our Indianapolis community. 

Highlights from the night:

• Met the 2021 Forging Leaders Campaign goal of $150 million early and beat it by $30 million. New goal is $250 million by 2025!

Guest Safety

This year the Gala will look different due to COVID-19. We are working diligently with our vendors to ensure attendee safety but still bring that Marian magic to the evening.  

Things to know before attending:

• Reduced capacity to allow for six-foot social distancing. This includes four people per table and drink lines. The entire ballroom space at JW Marriott - Indianapolis will contain no more than 640 attendees.  
• To limit guest interaction there is no dance floor, band, pre or post reception.  
• Masks are required unless eating or drinking 
• Stay home if you are sick, or are exhibiting any of the following symptoms; cough, shortness of breath, fever, chills, muscle pain or sore throat. 
• Based on currently available information and clinical expertise, older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions (heart disease, chronic lung disease, asthma, etc.) might be at a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19, and should not attend the event. 
• An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. 
• COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. 

If you plan to attend, please keep in mind the CDC recommendations on how to keep yourself and others healthy: 

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. 
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.

Honorees

Born in Argentina, Richard Miller immigrated to New York with his family as a teenager. As a brilliant young sales professional, he learned as much as he could at Nabisco Brands, then launched Fineline Printing with a small SBA loan and strong business aptitude in 1981. 

Passionate about his Argentinean heritage, Richard certified Fineline as a minority-owned business, both locally and nationally. A founder and board member of the Indianapolis Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Richard was later chosen for the Indiana Chamber Board of Directors. Richard is also a long-standing member of the Mid-States Minority Supplier Development Council (MSDC) and actively serves on their Board of Directors. 

 Since 1981, Richard has steadfastly groomed Fineline into one of the Midwest's leading commercial graphics and mailing providers. The company now boasts more than 70 employees and occupies over 70,000 square feet of space. 

About the John A. Purdie Innovator and Mentor of the Year Award 

The John A. Purdie Innovator and Mentor of the Year Award is named for Marian University Trustee John A. Purdie, a certified public accountant and graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Herman C. Krannert School of Business at Purdue University. Purdie served as president of Regency Windsor Capital, Inc., a family-owned real estate investment holding company in Florida.

Purdie is a member of Legatus of Indiana and has also been involved with Right to Life of Indianapolis, the St. Luke’s Catholic Church Finance Council, the Indiana CPA Society, the American Institute of CPAs, and the Financial Executives Institute. Purdie and his wife, Pam, have been blessed with four children and five grandchildren.

J. Scott Davison, CLU, ChFC, is chairman, president and CEO of the companies of OneAmerica.

He was appointed president in 2013, CEO in 2014 and chairman of the board in 2017. Scott leads the OneAmerica nationwide network of companies and affiliates, which offer a wide variety of products, including retirement, individual life insurance, annuities, asset-based long-term care solutions and employee benefits.

He began his 34-year career in the insurance industry at UNUM, where he served in a variety of financial roles, including chief financial officer (CFO) of UNUM’s Duncanson & Holt reinsurance subsidiary. In 2000, Scott joined OneAmerica as vice president of strategic planning and corporate development. In 2004, he was appointed CFO. The Indianapolis Business Journal named him CFO of the Year in 2008.

Scott is the chair of the board of directors for Indiana University Health. He also serves on the boards of Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, American Council of Life Insurers, Ascend Indiana and chairs the board of trustees of The American College. He previously served as director and chairman of the board of Camptown, Inc., an Indianapolis youth-serving nonprofit.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics and history from Middlebury College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern Maine. He is an alumnus of Harvard Business School’s advanced management program. 

Lorraine Davison is a community volunteer and advocate for individuals with learning differences. As the mother of a Marian University senior born with autism spectrum disorder, Lorraine committed herself to becoming an expert on all aspects of autism, including the effects of the ADHD and anxiety disorders that are typical of individuals on the autism spectrum. Lorraine has used her experiences to counsel other parents and has shared her expertise with campus as the university has developed its approach to educating individuals with learning differences. Thanks to Lorraine's commitment and skill, Cameron is on schedule to graduate from Marian University in 2021 with a degree in mathematics. Lorraine also spent many years as an active volunteer with the boy scouts and The Assistance League. Lorraine holds a BBA from Pace University in New York City.

About the Franciscan Values Award

Marian University traces its roots to 1851, when the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, Indiana founded a teacher training school to serve the needs of the Catholic community in southeastern Indiana. The Sisters established Marian College in Indianapolis in 1937; today Marian University offers students an excellent education that emphasizes a Franciscan understanding of the sponsorship values of dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation, and responsible stewardship. These values represent the legacy of our founders and the foundation of our personal approach to educating the whole person. In honor of this legacy, each year Marian University presents the Franciscan Values Award in recognition of contributions to our community.

Glenn and Laura Jo Tebbe have been called - quite literally – to follow God and work for the Catholic Church in Indiana. Glenn graduated from Marian College in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in History. Laura Jo graduated in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. They began their life in Brookville, Indiana while Glenn attended Xavier University for a Masters in History and Laura Jo taught second grade.

After graduation from Xavier in 1972, a call came. It was the principal at St. Lawrence School in Lawrenceburg, asking Glenn to become the 7^th grade History teacher. Several years later there was a call again. This time it was the principal at St. Louis School in Batesville. She also was looking for a junior high History teacher.  A year later another call. St. Mary School in Greensburg needed a new principal. Though only 26, Glenn heeded the call and the family moved to Greensburg to begin a new adventure. 

Glenn was principal of St. Mary for 18 years and during that time Laura Jo also taught. She was brought in to teach when a 2^nd grade teacher took another job just days before school was to start. Glenn told the Board that if this arrangement didn’t work, he would find someone new at the end of the year. Laura Jo taught there 18 years.

Meanwhile Glenn moved in 1994 to become the Executive Director of the Indiana Non-Public Education Association, a consortium of non- public schools. This job combined his love for schools and public policy, as he lobbied for non-public schools. 

But in 2004 he got another call, this time by Archbishop Buechlein, to become the Executive Director of the Indiana Catholic Conference. The same year Laura Jo retired from teaching and began a new career as the Assistant Children’s Director of the Greensburg Public Library. 

Laura Jo retired in 2016 from the library, and Glenn retired in May of 2020. They remain active in Church and community activities and with their family. They are quite proud that two of their children graduated from Marian University – Ben in 1999 and Laura in 2004.

• Christopher, an attorney, lives in Greensburg with wife Kristy and children Isaac and Abe.
• Ben, head of the Theater Department at Marian University, lives in Indianapolis with his wife Adriana and daughter Amelia.
• Amanda, an attorney, lives in Madison, Wisconsin with husband Gino and sons Marco and Leo.
• Laura, teaches at Cardinal Ritter, and is married to John and together they have five children Sawyer, Berkley, Harpar, Owen and Toby.

 About the Dillon Family Distinguished Alumni Award

The Dillon Family Distinguished Alumni Award is given to alumni who have: attained significant achievements in their careers; exhibited a spirit of mentoring by providing guidance, support, encouragement and leadership to Marian University students, faculty, staff, or to individuals in the broader community and contribute through personal leadership, to the development and growth of the individuals mentored; demonstrated outstanding contributions to the growth, development, and visibility of Marian University through gifts of energy, time, and talents; demonstrated a commitment to achieving peace and social justice through significant contributions in a professional or volunteer role; contributed significantly to the welfare of others through volunteering in direct service endeavors; or made outstanding contributions to the improvement of the civic, national, global, or religious community through professional or volunteer leadership.

Emcee

Rafael Sánchez is a Murrow and multiple Emmy award winning Investigative Reporter/Anchor at WRTV-6-ABC. This past June, he received another Emmy for reporting excellence. 

Every year, Sánchez enjoys participating in about 50 charitable events that raise money and awareness for organizations around Central Indiana. In June in 2017, he completed his 2016-2017 responsibilities as Community Engagement Co-Chair for United Way of Central Indiana and assisted in raising millions of dollars to improve education, financial stability, health and basic needs benefiting thousands of families across our region.

Sánchez came to the Hoosier State from the Bronx, New York to attend Franklin College of Indiana where he triple majored in Journalism, Political Science, and Spanish. As a college trustee of his alma mater, he values the importance that Indiana’s independent private colleges bring to workforce development and minimizing the “brain drain.”
