Marian University Sponsors WTHR Health and Fitness Expo

by Katie Bradley | May 01, 2014

Nearly eight thousand people attended last weekend’s WTHR Health and Fitness Expo, presented by Marian University.

Held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, the expo featured: Andrew Luck, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts; Bret Michaels, legendary rocker, entrepreneur, and philanthropist; Nick Goepper, 2014 Olympic Winter Games bronze medalist skier; and Sarah Fisher, Verizon IndyCar team owner.

Marian University had more than 100 student volunteers from the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) and the Alan and Sue Leighton School of Nursing. Students and faculty performed adult health screenings and demonstrations for children including sessions about germs, the amount of sugar in their favorite drinks, and diaper changing.

However, the hit of the Marian University booth was the mannequin from the Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences simulation lab. Attendees were able to listen to the lungs of the mannequin to learn the difference between coughing and wheezing.

On Saturday, MU-COM organized the “Celebration of Wellness 5K,” which had nearly 100 people running, walking, or rolling to the finish line. Winners of the 5K received their awards on the main stage of the expo.

Other popular activities included: CrossFit with The Finish Line, cooking demonstrations with local chefs, and a group Zumba class.
