In this course, we will learn to read the evidence of the past through the experience of the present. Our focus will be upon the microcosm—the individual and unique neighborhoods of Paris, Rome, and Brussels, the palace of the Sun King in
Versailles,
the Papal enclaves of Avignon and the Vatican, and the Franciscan monastery of Nice. We will learn to read those environments for evidence of the many diverse communities that have existed through the ages and continue to exert their influence
today.
We want to pay attention to human activity as well as artifacts and environments that allow us to appreciate the rich layering of cultural history that has formed these places.
Cost: $4500 - $4800 (definitive cost determined by
December 15, 2015) includes:
Upon successful completion of this course (including submission of a final paper July 1, 2016), students will receive 3 hours credit in French, English, or Global Studies; in addition, they will have fulfilled the cultural awareness requirement of their General Education curriculum.
