Health Education Teaching Minor

As a student minoring in health education teaching at Marian, you will study the human body, nutrition, current topics in health and wellness, and first aid, among other things.

  • You will learn about planning, delivering, and evaluating educational content, lessons, activities, and programs, both in K-12 schools and in community settings.
  • You will learn how to promote healthy habits and lifestyles, prevent disease, and how to educate others about societal problems like alcohol and drug abuse, mental health issues, sexual and physical abuse, the importance of exercise and physical activity, and healthy food choices.

What will you study?

As a health education teaching minor at Marian University, you will complete 25 credits of coursework, including:

  • ESS 120, 230, 249, 370, 453 and SCI 102
  • Seven (7) credits of ESS elective courses

Among the topics and subjects you'll study are:

  • Biophysical values of activity, including isotonic, isometric, and plyometric exercise
  • First aid and methods of rendering emergency care in cases of sudden accidents or illness
  • Content, activities, and resources for delivering health instruction to K-12 students
  • Personal and community health/safety concepts and problems
  • Essentials of exercise science to identify and assess fitness, energy systems, and energy systems
  • Life sciences of biology, ecology, and environmental systems
  • Instructional methods in sports, fitness, strength, and conditioning

What career paths are available?

Most students who earn this minor seek careers as health education teachers, program directors, or coaches in K-12 settings. 

Other career options, however, could include:

  • Community health educators or specialists working for municipal or state agencies.
  • Program managers for nonprofit or charitable organizations like the United Way, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Feeding America, YMCA, and others. 
  • Health promotions coordinator in a hospital, clinic, or business.
  • Sales representative for medical, pharmaceutical, life science, and related companies.
