Designed for educators and school professionals ready to specialize in special education, SPED Prep provides a flexible online pathway to earn Indiana P–12 Exceptional Needs – Mild Interventions Teacher licensure. Phase 1: Foundations of Special Education

Students begin by developing a strong understanding of special education systems, student development, and inclusive practices.

FOCUS AREAS:
  • Foundations of special education
  • Developmental theories
  • Culturally responsive practice
  • Student-centered learning approaches

Phase 2: Evidence-Based Intervention

Participants learn how to support students with diverse learning needs through evidence-based instructional strategies.

FOCUS AREAS:
  • Literacy intervention (including Orton-Gillingham methods)
  • Numeracy interventions
  • Applied behavior analysis
  • Classroom support strategies

Phase 3: Clinical Practice and Licensure Preparation

Students apply what they have learned through field experiences and prepare for Indiana licensure assessments required for special education teachers.

  • Clinical fieldwork in P–12 settings
  • Assessment preparation
  • Classroom application
  • Professional practice in special education

This roadmap reflects a typical progression through the program. Individual experiences may vary as modules and clinical placement are tailored to each student’s licensure area and professional context.

Application Checklist 

To be eligible for admission, applicants must: 

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a CHEA and USDE accredited institution 
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (or 2.5 with five years of professional work experience)

  • Online application through the Marian University portal 
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended 
  • Resume or CV 
  • Background check through Indiana State Police (INkless)

Applicants currently employed in a P–12 school are preferred, as the program requires completion of a clinical internship.
