Bio
William D. Moscoso Barrera, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Marian University (joined July 2025). His work centers on the design and translation of innovative biomedical technologies that integrate engineering design, biosignals, and user-centered methods to address real-world health challenges. Current priorities include focused ultrasound neurostimulation, wearable systems for peripheral nerve and brain stimulation, and physiological monitoring for pain, sleep, memory, and mental health. He is also committed to inclusive engineering education and STEM outreach for underserved communities.
Before joining Marian, Dr. Moscoso completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Biomedical Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Austin under Prof. Huiliang (Evan) Wang, contributing to NIH- and DARPA-supported clinical studies. There, he led efforts on fully wearable neurostimulation devices for pain management and brain-stimulation wearables to enhance sleep quality. He brings more than 12 years of teaching across biomedical, electronics, mechanical, industrial, and computer engineering, and his applied research spans digital health, assistive technologies for motor, visual, and auditory disabilities, and biosignal acquisition and processing (EEG, ECG, EMG, PPG). Beyond academia, he has extensive experience facilitating creativity and innovation workshops (emphasizing problem-solving, strategy, change management, and organizational culture) and has consulted for manufacturing, healthcare, and service organizations. He is the inventor of four patents granted in Colombia and one U.S. patent, all focused on biomedical and assistive technologies.

Teaching Philosophy
Dr. Moscoso designs courses using learn-by-doing, project-based learning, and problem-based design processes in engineering. Students prototype early, iterate with evidence, and reflect on ethics and user needs. By integrating engineering fundamentals with design thinking and community engagement, Dr. Moscoso aims to develop adaptable engineers who can translate ideas into viable, socially meaningful solutions ready for real-world impact.

Mental health: use of smartphones and sensors for diagnostic screening (depression and anxiety)
