Paulo Castro, M.M.

Biography

Paulo Castro is a Brazilian-American conductor, pianist, vocalist, arranger, and educator whose work brings together performance, education, and community engagement. Professor Castro holds a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Butler University and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from São Paulo State University. A native of Brazil, Castro moved to Indianapolis in 2009 to pursue graduate studies at Butler, and Indianapolis became Home.

An active and versatile musician, Castro has collaborated with many of Indianapolis’ leading arts organizations, including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, Indianapolis Children’s Choir, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Arts Chorale, and Lilly Chorus. His performance experience has taken him to renowned venues across the United States and abroad, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall, Memorial da América Latina, Theatro Municipal and Teatro Sao Pedro, in São Paulo, Brazil.

As an educator, clinician, and vocal and musical coach, Castro has worked with students and ensembles from elementary school through the collegiate level, partnering with public and private schools, churches, and community organizations. His work in musical theater and educational productions includes Bye Bye Birdie, The Lion King Jr., Mulan Jr., Aladdin, and a variety of Broadway-focused concerts and programs.

Community engagement is central to Castro’s work as an artist and educator. He has contributed to numerous collaborative and civic arts initiatives throughout Indianapolis, using music as a way to bring people together across cultures, generations, and communities. In 2016, he served as Artistic Director for the public ceremony welcoming His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Indianapolis.

Outside of music, Paulo enjoys climbing (bouldering), craft beer and cooking and traveling and exploring new spots, locally and everywhere!
