Maggie Fitzgerald, Ph.D.

Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. Fitzgerald earned her B.A. in History and Secondary Education at Roanoke College in Virginia. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in African History with minors in Global Studies and Gender Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Her research focuses on the history of artist-activists in antiapartheid South Africa. Her current book project foregrounds theater, studio and documentary photography, and print literature as central sites of antiapartheid resistance in the late-twentieth century. Supported by a Fulbright-Hays fellowship and FLAS awards, her work utilizes oral historical research alongside archival research in isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, and English to interpret the history of radical politics, feminisms, black consciousness, and political violence in South Africa.

Alongside history and global studies research, Dr. Fitzgerald also teaches Ceramics at Ivy Tech Community College, Bloomington.

As an interdisciplinary scholar, she is committed to helping students think critically and broadly.  Her teaching emphasizes the connections between past and present, equipping students with tools to understand global phenomena from a variety of perspectives. She hopes to prepare students not only as scholars but as engaged, thoughtful global citizens.
