Bio
Karen Wright, Ed.D., is a member of the Fred S. Klipsch Educators College at Marian University, where she serves as the director of residencies and clinical experiences. In this role, she supports aspiring educators as they prepare to enter their own classroom. Dr. Wright received her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Kentucky State University and master's degree in justice administration from the University of Louisville. Her work began with Child Protective Services in Louisville, Kentucky, and continued with the Department of Juvenile Justice as a proactive liaison in the Owensboro Independent School District. After relocating to Evansville, Indiana, she became a regional manager for a Head Start Program and discovered a love for education. This led her to obtaining her master’s degree from the University of Phoenix in elementary education, setting the path to become a teacher, district coach, and principal. Dr. Wright obtained her Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Marian University with a goal to implement strategic practices that are adaptive to the needs of program individuals and key stakeholders. In addition, Dr. Wright has conducted qualitative research to better understand the impact of external factors on the lived experience of teacher residents. This work has ignited a passion and desire to design programming and supports that meet the ever-changing needs of residents and aspiring educators intentionally and reflectively.
In addition, Dr. Wright has been recognized for her outstanding leadership and dedication to education, earning the African American Excellence in Education Congressional Award for her impact and commitment to student success. She further strengthened her leadership expertise by completing the prestigious Relay National Principal Academy Fellowship, a program designed to develop transformational school leaders. She continues to advance her influence in education as a board member for Invent Learning Hub, where she contributes her experience and insight to support innovative learning opportunities for all students.

Teaching Philosophy
Dr. Wright's teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that all children are capable of learning and achieving success when provided with the right support and opportunities. She believes educators have the profound responsibility to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to take risks in their learning. Instruction should be grounded in data-driven, evidence-based practices that honor the diverse needs, strengths, and learning styles of each student.
By approaching teaching with intentionality, compassion, and high expectations, Dr. Wright strives to ensure that every child is recognized as a unique individual with unlimited potential, deserving of equitable access to meaningful, engaging, and transformative learning experiences.
Research Interests
Dr. Wright’s research interests center on understanding the lived experiences of new educators as they navigate the transition from preparation programs into the realities of the classroom. She is particularly interested in exploring the factors that influence their sense of preparedness, professional identity, and overall job satisfaction, as well as the systemic supports that contribute to teacher retention and long-term success.
By examining the challenges and triumphs of early-career educators, she aims to identify effective strategies for training, mentoring, and ongoing professional development that are responsive to the evolving needs of today’s educational landscape. Ultimately, Dr. Wright’s goal is to inform practices and policies that empower, sustain, and retain talented educators, ensuring that every new teacher is equipped to thrive and make a lasting impact on student learning.
