Bio
Emily Young, MD, MEHP, joined the Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine clinical faculty in 2015 as assistant professor of pediatrics. She was promoted to associate professor in 2023 and chair of pre-clinical skills education in 2024. Dr. Young is board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics and earned her Master of Education in the Health Professions degree in 2025.
Courses Taught
Dr. Young's teaching focuses on clinical skills across the pre-clinical curriculum (four-semester Introduction to Clinical Medicine course series). She also runs a large, extracurricular mentoring program that develops first- and second-year osteopathic students' skills in integrating values (humanism in medicine and Marian’s Franciscan values) into patient care.
Teaching Philosophy
Her teaching philosophy centers on fostering meaningful transformation in learners by helping them connect prior experiences with new knowledge. She views learning as a collaborative, reflective process in which the teacher guides and supports the learner. She creates conditions for deep learning through dialogue, reflection, and perspective-taking, encouraging students to think critically and apply insights to real situations.
Dr. Young finds great satisfaction from witnessing students’ growth in confidence, curiosity, and understanding as they develop into thoughtful, compassionate lifelong learners.
Research Interests
Dr. Young's research discipline is the scholarship of teaching and learning. She applies mixed methods for continual quality improvement in active learning and teaching strategies, with emphasis on curricular development and universal design for learning. She has a special interest in the use of mentoring to develop a humanistic approach to patient care in future physicians.
