Alison Bates, Ph.D.

Biography

I am a molecular biology research scientist serving as the Laboratory Operations Manager for the Biology and Chemistry departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. I also conduct my own research on improving CRISPR gene editing methods in Streptomyces bacteria.

I hold a double major Bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Performance and Biological Sciences from DePauw University, as well as a Master of Music degree in Vocal Music Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. I first pursued a career as a professional opera singer, performing with Chautauqua Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Minnesota Opera, and Palm Beach Opera, as well as numerous other symphony orchestras and performing ensembles.

I then attended the Indiana University School of Medicine, obtaining a Master of Science degree in Cellular and Integrative Physiology and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, conducting research in telomere dysfunction in ovarian cancer, Wnt signaling in pancreatic cancer, and 3-dimensional DNA organization in human cells, all with an emphasis on CRISPR genetic engineering.

I have since worked in multiple biotech industry roles, developing CRISPR gene editing platforms in Streptomyces bacteria and developing high-throughput transfection-grade plasmid purification systems. I am passionate about CRISPR gene editing and genomics research, and I enjoy having the opportunity to share my love of DNA with students as a research mentor in addition to my lab management role.
