Historical 2003-20

Since the Global Studies Speaker Series was launched in Spring 2004 with the establishment of the Franciscan Center for Global Studies, LFCGS has hosted numerous foreign and US diplomats and academics, elected representatives, clergy, international journalists, musicians, and global activists. LFCGS has also hosted or co-sponsored major panel discussions, conferences and multi-part series, including the 2006 Indianapolis Summit on Citizen Diplomacy; the 2007 Workshop on Darfur; the 2009 Open Square Forum on International Violence against Women; the two-part series on Torture and Interrogation in an Age of Terrorism in 2011; the interfaith panel discussion on Egypt and the Middle East: One Year after Mubarak in 2012; the Three- Part Series on American Foreign Policy and Global Leadership in an Age of Partisan Division and the Panel Discussion on Bioethics and Global Health: Challenges for the 21st Century, both in 2013-2014; the Three-Part Series on Refugees and Migration in 2016, the Two-Part Series on Energy and Sustainability in Spring 2018; and the 2019 panel discussion on “Germany, Thirty Years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall.”

The average audience for LFCGS public events is approximately 100-125 people from on and off-campus, with record attendance exceeding 500. In Spring 2017, LFCGS hosted the Indianapolis debut screening of the film The Sultan and the Saint with a capacity interfaith audience from central Indiana. LFCGS has partnered with many local and national globally focused organizations and the events are filmed and posted on Marian’s iTunes U page and on YouTube. The widely publicized Speaker Series provides opportunities to connect Marian University students and faculty with the increasingly international and multicultural community of central Indiana. The 2019-20 speaker series will mark the fourteenth consecutive year of LFCGS collaboration with Catholic Relief Services.
