This spring, the Office of Campus Ministry will launch a program aimed at combining the university’s Franciscan heritage with medical education.
The Franciscan Physician Vocation Program for prospective doctors of osteopathic medicine is a four-year curricular and co-curricular vocation and formation experience within the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
This is designed as a cohort program and will require an application for acceptance into the program. Formation within the group will include readings and discussions from Franciscan, spiritual, and medical sources; prayer; retreats; hospitality and fellowship; spiritual direction; and collaboration in clinical settings.
“I’m going to be introducing them to the whole concept of spirituality as a physician,” John Shelton, campus minister for Spiritual Formation, said. “They need to be attending to their own spiritual well being as they learn.”
The program builds upon a progression of physician vocational formation within four years, paying careful attention to the ebb and flow of the challenging osteopathic curriculum and clinical practice.
Fifteen students have been accepted into the program and will begin their spiritual journeys this spring.
The Franciscan Physician Vocation Program will be funded through a $29,500 grant from Our Sunday Visitor, a Catholic publishing organization in Indiana.
