INDIANAPOLISKokomo Schools and Marian University have entered into a partnership to recruit and retain teachers, with a focus on minorities. The new outreach program, which is made possible by a grant from Duke Energy, includes five sessions and will begin in November and extend into December 2016.

"We appreciate the partnerships with Duke Energy and Marian University as Kokomo Schools continues our efforts to recruit and hire quality teachers for our students,” Dave Barnes, director of communications for Kokomo Schools, said. “Kokomo Schools also wishes to thank our community partners--Carver Community Center, Refreshing Springs Church of God in Christ, and Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church--for hosting these community forums."

“We are excited to be included as a partner with Kokomo Schools as we help bring awareness and more teachers to support the great leadership provided by Dr. Hauswald,” Dr. Kenith Britt, Dean of Marian University’s Educators College, said. "We greatly value our relationship with Duke Energy and appreciate their interest in supporting K-12 students in Indiana."

In all sessions, faculty from Marian University’s Educators College will meet with Kokomo high school students and potential career changers to provide information about teaching as a career and opportunities available to pursue teacher licensure. "There is nothing more important than having strong teachers in every classroom," Kevin Johnston, Duke Energy Kokomo community relations manager, said. "We support Kokomo Schools and their interests in increasing the population of aspiring teachers and school leaders."
