Knights Win Second Straight National BMX Title, 25th National Championship

by Michael Kubancsek | Apr 16, 2014

The Marian University Cycling Team raced to its 25th national championship and second consecutive BMX national title in DeSoto, Texas on Friday, April 4.

Sophomore Justin Posey defended his 2013 individual national title and freshman Felicia Stancil also raced to an individual championship to lead the Knights’ charge towards the championship.

The collegiate event took place at the USA BMX Super Nationals with more than ten schools present and vying for podium places. After three motos for seeding, all four women and five men racing for the Knights qualified for the semifinals.

"We knew we had quality across the board, but you never know what's going to happen at a national championship,” said Head Cycling Coach Dean Peterson. “I'm proud of how the riders handled everything, from preparation to racing.”

In addition to Stancil and Posey’s championships, freshman Kristen Bob earned a second place in the women’s main, with sophomore Shay Glynn taking fifth and senior Crystal Kalogris coming in sixth. In the men’s main, junior Bryce Hocking raced to fourth and freshman Tyler Whitfield to seventh.

Following BMX, the fourth of five national championships in the collegiate season, Marian Cycling is well-poised to defend their Division I Omnium Title from the 2012-2013 season. The Knights sit in first place in the overall competition with 389 points to second-place Fort Lewis College’s 357.
