Meet the Faculty: Christy Moore, Ed.D.

by Julia Kelb | Jan 31, 2018

Christy MooreFor Christy Moore, Ed.D., associate professor in the Fred S. Klipsch Educators College, teaching was always a career she wanted to pursue. As a kid, she’d write on a little chalkboard in her room and turn to address a classroom full of imaginary students. After receiving her undergraduate degree, that imaginary classroom transformed into a real classroom, full of real third graders.

Moore taught in that third-grade classroom for ten years and began teaching at the college level after completing two graduate degrees. She has been a faculty member at Marian University for three years, and serves as the advisor for College Mentors for Kids.

Q & A with Christy Moore

Q: What has been your favorite part of working at Marian University so far?

A: I love the people that work in the Klipsch College. Another favorite part has been being here for all of the changes. If you are changing, you are growing and improving. Also, the students are great.

Q: What classes do you teach?

A: I teach half undergraduate and half graduate courses. At the graduate level, I teach reading and literacy courses, as well as childhood development. At the undergraduate level, I teach reading and writing in the content areas, introduction to kindergarten, and differentiated instruction. When I go to graduation, I know that I’ve had had all of the education students at some point and time.

Q: How did you get involved with College Mentors for Kids?

A: As soon as I got here, they needed an advisor, and they came and asked me to do it. It’s an amazing group. We bring 45 kids from Holy Angels Catholic School, and for every student we bring, they have a college mentor. The goal is to let them know about college life and show them what we’d like them to aspire to do at some point and time. Our youngest group over there is first or second grade. They see that college life isn’t as intimidating as it may seem.

Q: Outside of work, what do you like to do?

A: We love to do family things. I just moved back here three years ago, so we all live within about 20 minutes of each other. I also love sports. I am very competitive, so we watch college football, NFL, the Yankees.
