I am a Full Professor of sociology and served as the founding Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for six years. I completed my graduate studies at Indiana University-Bloomington in 1995 and immediately began my position at (then) Marian College. I am the author of Redeeming Time: Protestantism and the Eight-Hour Movement in Chicago, 1886-1912 (University of Illinois Press). I am co-author of Religion Matters: What Sociology Teaches Us about Religion in our World, Second Edition (Routledge), Religion and Class in America: Culture, History, and Politics, (Brill Publishing) and Sociology of Religion: A Reader, Third Edition (Routledge). My research also has been published in Sociology of Religion, Social Problems, and Social Science History.
Away from MU, I am an avid horseman, formerly riding with the Traders Point Hunt in Zionsville, IN. I enjoy fine food and wine and am a member the Indianapolis Sous-Commanderie of the Confrerie des Chevalier du Tastevin, a Burgundian wine guild. I collect English antiques, watch British television, travel extensively, and enjoy listening to 1970s and 80s punk and new wave as well as classical Baroque music. As a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Indianapolis, I serve as a Minister of Ceremonies at Mass and have served on the governing Board of the parish and on the Board of Trustees for St. Richard’s Episcopal School.
