Why Choose a B.A. in Global Studies at Marian?

Global Studies teaches students how to think critically about complicated global realities. It encourages them to explore their responsibility as a global citizen and to consider how political economic, social, and cultural forces intersect to create both opportunities and challenges. The program prepares students to become leaders in their chosen career fields by providing them with the analytical tools and contextual knowledge necessary to navigate our increasingly interconnected world.

Our dedicated and accomplished faculty members bring a wide range of research specialties and disciplines to the analysis of global issues. Our courses explore key topics like healthcare, business, law, and the environment through an ethical framework rooted in the Franciscan Values of Dignity of the Individual, Responsible Stewardship, Reconciliation, and Peace and Justice. Incorporating political science, economics, and cultural studies, the curriculum prepares students to critically engage with complex global challenges.

Political Science

In Global Studies, we incorporate political science to examine international relations, political systems, and the dynamics of global power. Students study how countries interact through diplomacy, foreign policy, and international organizations like the United Nations. They also analyze different forms of government and how geopolitical factors, such as geography and resources, influence global events. This part of the curriculum teaches students to critically assess conflicts, alliances, and the role of international law, preparing them to address global security challenges and policy issues.

Economics

The economics aspect of Global Studies focuses on global economic systems and their interconnectedness. Students learn about international trade, global finance, and the impact of multinational corporations. They also explore key concepts such as development economics, analyzing the causes of wealth inequality and global poverty. This discipline provides the tools to understand how economic policies shape globalization, the function of international financial institutions like the World Bank, and the challenges of achieving sustainable economic growth on a worldwide scale.

Cultural Studies

Global Studies emphasizes deep engagement with diverse cultures and global perspectives. Cultural studies provides a critical framework to analyze complex global phenomena, while language study is essential for high-level intercultural competency. Consequently, Global Studies majors are required to study a language as part of their degree. Students are additionally highly encouraged to pursue a faculty-led study abroad program to gain immersive experience, stimulate personal growth, and cultivate the skills necessary for success as globally aware citizens and leaders.
