The history major engages and challenges students to think broadly and critically about their relationship to the past through time, place, and ideas. The program pays particular attention to the effects of perspectives, values, and morals. We move the students beyond the preconceived idea that the study of history is only the collection of fact. We are dedicated to creating responsible learners and citizens who are aware of their own society and who can analyze both the present and the past with open minds and a strong historical consciousness.
The study of history does not have absolute chronological or methodological standards, and professors are given a wide range of latitude in defining the specific thematic and analytical content of their courses. All professors introduce students to a variety of sources, including primary and secondary sources. Historical inquiry is not limited to textual analysis; we also promote visual literacy and an understanding of new media. All faculty are dedicated to an open classroom environment that promotes class discussion. All courses present arguments that introduce students to the interconnections between cultures, society, economics, and politics.
