1. Go out to coffee and get to know them.

When you find out who your roommate is, get to know them over some coffee or lunch. Get a feel for who they are while enjoying a cold iced caramel macchiato at our campus Starbucks.

2. Establish rules and boundaries right away.

Establish Rules

It’s better to go over rules early on so that there’s no problems later on down the road. For example, sharing food might be an issue for your roommate so it’s best to sit down together and discuss things like that beforehand.

3. Don’t be afraid to address conflicts.

Be open to communicating your concerns early on, and squashing the tension before something gets too big.

4. Be open to your roommate’s lifestyle, even if it’s different from yours.

Roommate's Lifestyle

Everyone is different and had a different upbringing. It’s important to remember this when navigating your relationship with your roommate. For example, your roommate may be a bit of a night owl while you are a morning person. Be open to the possibility of something like this.

5. It’s okay to have other friends.

 Making Friends

Having a good friendship with your roommate is great, but don’t be afraid to venture out and make other connections. There’s plenty of opportunities to make friends at Marian whether it be through a sports team, or through any clubs we have to offer.

6. Remember to be considerate.

Be Considerate

The famous saying, “treat others how you want to be treated,” has never been so essential when it comes to living with a roommate. Remember that it’s a two way street as well, so try not to point fingers.

7. Be a good listener.

Be good a listener

Grow your connection with your roommate by lending a helpful ear. They will appreciate your kindness, and this will likely make your living situation more enjoyable overall.

8. Enjoy college together.

Enjoy College

Find fun things to do together to keep your roommate bond strong. Maybe this means a movie night after a long day of school, or attending Marian football games together for some good food, and fun.
