Meet the Minister

Joey Garcia is a Marian University Alum. He is married to Laura ('11) and together they have 4 kids (Ellie, Joey, Theo, and Aggie). They also have a golden doodle puppy named Wrangler. During his time off, Joey enjoys off-roading in his Jeep and camping with his family. Joey strives to create music or beautiful moments with others through encounters.

Fun Facts about Joey:

1. I won the Geography Bee in seventh grade!
2. If I wasn't a music minister, I'd be a carpenter or mechanic.
3. My two sons' middle names are after archangels, Michael and Gabriel. (Bonus fun fact Wrangler's middle name is also Raphael)

Eucharistic Adoration

Through eucharistic adoration, we encounter the real presence of our Lord. During this encounter, we are fully present with the physical being of Christ. This is an opportunity to give ourselves fully to Christ who meets us where we are. 

Adoration is offered on campus every Wednesday in the Saint Joseph chapel from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

University Ministry also offers Awake Nights throughout the year. Awake Nights consist of a speaker and adoration. Each one has a unique speaker who shares insight for the first half hour. This is then followed by an hour of adoration. During adoration, praise is sung, along with many moments of silence with the Lord.

Mass and Reconciliation

Mass is a vital part of campus life at Marian University. Mass is celebrated at least once daily except on Saturdays. The schedule for daily Masses is...

• Monday at noon in the Saint Joseph Chapel (attached to Caito-Wagner Hall)
• Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Saint Joseph Chapel
• Wednesday at noon in the Saint Joseph Chapel
• Thursday at both 7 a.m. in the Saint Francis Chapel (Oldenburg Hall) and 4 p.m. in the Saint Joseph Chapel
• Friday at noon in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel (Evans Center)
• Sunday at 10:30 a.m. & 7:30 p.m. in the Bishop Chartrand Memorial Chapel (Marian Hall)

We also celebrate All Campus Masses throughout the year in the Bishop Chartrand Memorial Chapel. These are opportunities for all students, faculty and staff members, and anyone of the Marian community to join in celebration. During these times, in order to allow all those wishing to participate, classes and meetings are canceled.

Liturgical Ministry

Masses need ministers to help with the parts of the mass. On campus, our students can be ministers in the areas of serving, greeting, reading, and ministering the Eucharist. If you are looking to help with the masses, we train liturgical ministers at the beginning of the school year, but you may be trained individually throughout the school year. This training is necessary for those looking to be servers, ministers of welcomes, readers, and Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs).

Sacred Choir

Another ministry of the mass is music ministry through the sacred choir. Sacred Choir is a group of students that prepare the music for worship for all of our Campus Masses, an evening of prayer and song, and off-campus outings. These students gather on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the Bishop Chartrand Memorial Chapel from 3:30-4:45 p.m. to lift their hearts and voices to God in praise.

Sacred Choir is a one-credit course, but can be a half-credit or non-credit based on your schedule.

Prayer Opportunities

There are many different opportunities to pray on campus. Just like all the students on campus, each person's prayer is unique to them. There are numerous types of prayers, along with communal and individual prayers. There are many opportunities on campus for prayer.

Some of many prayer opportunities include...

• Liturgy of the Hours- This is the daily prayer of the Church. There are five hours that are observed, Office of Readings, Morning, Midday, Evening, and Night Prayer. Students gather together at 10 p.m. daily to pray Night Prayer in the Saint Francis Chapel (Oldenburg Hall). Liturgy of the Hours will be prayed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in the Saint Francis Chapel.
  • A great resource for Liturgy of the Hours is IBreviary, which is an app that can be downloaded to your device.
  • There is an opportunity to pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel every day.
• Rosary- The rosary is a repetitious and contemplative prayer attributed to the Blessed Mother. It combines prayers of the Apostles' Creed, the Our Father, Hail Mary, and scriptures. Students can participate at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel, and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Bishop Chartrand Memorial Chapel.
• Spontaneous Praise and Worship- Our four chapels can be used for some spontaneous praise and worship. If you and your friends are musically inclined, the chapels are a great place to sit and worship the Lord through your musical talents.
• Divine Mercy Chaplet - The Divine Mercy Chaplet is much like the rosary, as it is a meditative and repetitive prayer style using the beads of the rosary. Different prayers are used instead of the traditional Our Father and Hail Mary. This prayer can also be sung if you feel so inclined.  
• Saint Francis Prayer - As a Franciscan University the Saint Francis prayer is another great resource for prayer.
• Jesus Prayer- This is a simple prayer of "Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."
• Litanies- Litanies are a series of petitions and intercessory prayers. These are often call and repeat prayers but can be prayed alone as well. There are many litanies for many different petitions.
• Novenas- Novenas are devotional prayers that span nine days. There are hundreds of novenas in all different categories. Often times they are prayed for nine days up to a feast but also can be prayed for certain intentions. 
• Prayers to the Saints- There are devotional prayers to many of the saints that can be prayed for their intercessions in our daily lives. Just Google the saint of your choosing and you can find many prayers.
• Lectio Divina- This prayer is a meditative style of prayer based on the Scriptures. This four-step prayer helps you dive deep into a Scripture passage.

Don't be afraid to try some less structured prayer styles as well...

• Contemplative Prayer- Contemplative prayer is sitting quietly alone with the Father and the Son. 
• Heart Prayer- This type of prayer is talking to God as a friend. Just open up your heart to God.
• Journaling- Write and/or draw in your notebook or journal to praise the Lord. 
• Listening to/Playing Christian Music- Use music to praise.
• Meditation- Sit on all of the beauty and blessings along with the struggles of life with God.
• Prayer Walking- Take a walk in the beauty of nature that God has given us.
• Reading the Bible- Opening the Bible and reading the Word of the Lord is prayer. A Bible study will be conducted on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in Evans Center 150.
• Spiritual Readings- Reflect on readings from any spiritual book.
• Spontaneous Prayer- Just pray. Speak what your heart is telling you to let go to God. A group of students will be practicing this on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. in the Saint Francis Chapel (Oldenburg).
• Thank God for the beauty of nature. When you see the sunrise or sunset just say "thank you Lord"

Prayer Spaces

Chapels

Did you know Marian has four Chapels on campus? These sacred spaces are environments for prayer and worship on campus.

• Bishop Chartrand Memorial Chapel (BCMC)- Our largest chapel on campus, located in Marian Hall. 
• Saint Francis Chapel- Dedicated to our patron this chapel has its home in Oldenburg Hall.
• Saint Joseph's Chapel- Our newest chapel which is attached to the Caito-Wagner dorm.
• Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH)- Found in the Evan's Center, this chapel uses wood from the trees that were cut down to make the building. 

Other Spaces

• The Assisi prayer space (or Multi-faith space)- If you want a non-denominational prayer space this is the place for you. You can find this in Clare Hall, in between the dining commons and the arena. The Assisi prayer space is open to any person.
• Rosary walk and Mary Shrine- Located by the Tea Garden, you can pray the rosary within nature or just gaze upon the face of Mary.
• Saint Francis Colonnade- This is a beautiful place to immerse yourself in the creation of God. Standing before the entrance of the eco-lab, this statue reminds us of the beauty of God within creation, for which St. Francis loved. 

You can also take time for prayer while gazing at any of our religious art on campus.
