Mother Clarissa Dillhoff Award for Distinguished Achievement in Mentoring Presented to Doris Garland Downing '73

Doris Garland Downing 1973This award reflects the most important meaning of the word "mentor"--a person who is trusted to educate another. Mother Clarissa was a counselor and guide, and it was under her leadership that Marian University moved from Oldenburg to Indianapolis in 1937. Award recipients must be alumni of the university; demonstrate the spirit of mentoring by providing guidance, support, encouragement, and leadership to the university community, or to individual in the broader community; and contribute, through personal leadership, to the development and growth of the individual mentored.

At the 2016 Gala, Doris Garland Downing '73 was awarded this honor. Since graduating from Marian University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1973, Doris Garland Downing has spent her career as a leader in education and it currently an adjunct faculty member and university supervisor for the Graduate Programs in Education at Marian University. For 35 years, she worked in the Indianapolis-area school systems as a teacher in the Indianapolis Public School system, assistant principal in Washington Township, and principal in Lawrence Township, where she was awarded the Indiana Four Star School award, State Blue Ribbon award, and the Principal's Lilly Grant. As a lifelong learner, Downing continued her education, receiving a master of science in elementary education from Indiana University, and is currently earning a doctor of education in education leadership from Indiana University. Additionally, she has been constantly giving back to Marian University by lending her talents in supporting student-athletes at study-tables and her time by managing the ticket office at football and basketball games. Her love for Marian University is evident in her continued commitment to the Knights.

Successful Kick Off for Year of the Alumni

by Amber Ferrari | Jul 24, 2014

Last weekend officially kicked off the Year of the Alumni. Events happened Thursday through Saturday to officially begin this special year.

“Just about every time I come back to campus in recent years, I see or learn of some new amazing thing going on at Marian University that re-ignites my pride,” said Patti Cavanaugh ‘76, Marian University Alumni Association president.

Chanel Reeder, assistant director of alumni relations, annual giving, said, “The kick-off events for the Year of the Alumni were a huge success!  It was wonderful to see so many alumni from across the generations come together to celebrate friendships, memories, and Marian University. The energy of the alumni at the events was contagious!”

Thirty alumni gathered for Thirsty Thursday at Front Page Sports Bar and Grill. Prizes were given away, food was served, and conversation was quick as alumni exchanged stories about their alma mater. It was a great way to start the fun-filled weekend.

On Friday, Marian University alumni headed out to Conner Prairie for Symphony on the Prairie. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra hosted “College and Alumni Night” and Marian University had the largest collective group of alumni at the event with an outstanding total of 90 Knights attending. Staff, faculty, and alumni joined with their families to listen to radio tunes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Sister Norma’s birthday added some extra flare to the festivities as cupcakes were served, and a special announcement made from the stage wishing her a happy birthday.

Tea on the Terrace, previously known as the Women of Marian Luncheon, was held in the Michael A.  Evans Center for Health Sciences on Saturday, July 19. More than 60 alumnae joined together for a light lunch, tea, and mimosas on the Evans Center terrace. Tours of the building followed.

Cavanaugh said, “My favorite part of the tea was seeing and hearing the reactions of Marian women who participated in the after-lunch -tour of the Evans Center for the very first time. If I heard one woman say ‘I want to go back to school,’ I heard a dozen or more express that sentiment while touring the building and facility.”

Karen McNulty ’12, assistant director of alumni relations said, “I enjoyed seeing all of the alumni come together in fun and unique ways with each of the events. The weekend was a great way to get the Year of the Alumni started.”

The Office of Alumni Relations has carried their excitement over from the weekend and are planning many more exciting events for Year of the Alumni.

“Our Kick-Off weekend was a huge success.  We saw faces and families at our events that have not been back to campus or a part of Marian University since graduation.  This is exactly what this year is about—celebrating and engaging!” said Nichole Ellis, director of alumni and donor relations.

Now that we have kicked-off Year of the Alumni, we remind our alumni that the fun does not stop here! There will be plenty more opportunities to gather, remember, and give.

Next up, we have the Grand Slam Summer Baseball Series, where Marian University alumni, faculty, and staff will gather in Chicago, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis for four baseball games. We will also continue to have Thirsty Thursdays each third Thursday of the month.

“I hope other alumni will venture back this year, particularly during football season and during Homecoming weekend October 17-19. I have already made a pledge to myself that I will find a way to attend more games this year, and encourage my classmates and college friends to do the same,” said Cavanaugh.
