Medical Students Provide Health Screenings to Westside Community

by Katie Bradley | Mar 30, 2015

A group of Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) students organized a health screening fair at Saraga International Supermarket on Indianapolis’ Westside on Saturday, March 21.

Eight first- and second-year medical students—all members of the Student Osteopathic Radiology Association(SORA)—and their faculty advisor, Melita Marcial-Schuster, DO, participated in the health fair as outreach to the community. The fair included screenings for blood pressure and BMI (body mass index).

Once the students assessed people, they referred them to local low-cost or no-cost clinics for a more thorough checkup.

“We found out that a lot of people are concerned about their health, but do not know how to get it taken care of,” said Brian Tran, second-year MU-COM student.

Overall, the volunteers served approximately 40 people during the three hours they spent at Saraga. They plan to repeat this outreach next year.

Now in its second year, MU-COM’s more than 30 student organizations give students the opportunity to get involved in volunteering, supporting the profession, promoting wellness in the campus in local communities, and much more.
