Carolyn Woo, Ph.D., president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, will deliver lectures on campus as a part of the university’s Global Studies Speaker Series.

Dr. Woo’s lecture, titled “God, Neighbor, Self”, will be held Tuesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Marian University Theatre. Dr. Woo joined CRS in January 2012 after a distinguished career in academics, including a stint from 1997-2011 as dean of the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. She also served as associate executive vice president for Academic Affairs at Purdue University.

CRS was founded in 1943 by the Catholic bishops of the United States to serve survivors of World War II in Europe. Since then, it has become one of the world’s largest and most respected international relief and development agencies, each year reaching more than 130 million people in nearly 100 countries. Dr. Woo’s lecture represents Marian University’s eighth annual Global Studies Speaker Series event with CRS.

Archbishop Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.Archbishop Tobin’s lecture, “The Catholic Church: Catalyst for, or Obstacle to a Better World?”, will be held Wednesday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Marian University Theatre. Archbishop Tobin was appointed the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in October 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.

“Marian University is proud to provide this platform for Dr. Woo and Archbishop Tobin to address issues that are important to Catholics and the Church, and the broader community,” Dr. Pierre Atlas, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of The Richard G. Lugar Franciscan Center for Global Studies at Marian University, said. “As central Indiana’s only Catholic university, it’s incumbent upon us to connect Church leaders to the community.”

Admission to both lectures is free to the public, although pre-registration is encouraged. To RSVP for the lectures, please visit www.marian.edu/lfcgs.

The Global Studies Speaker Series is offered through Marian University’s Richard G. Lugar Franciscan Center for Global Studies (LFCGS), whose mission is to shape tomorrow’s leaders with values-centered global perspectives. LFCGS sponsors and promotes the study of contemporary global issues with special attention to Marian University’s core Franciscan values: dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation, and responsible stewardship.
