The Marian University Senior Show Gallery Hop will feature the work of eight art department seniors: Sydney Shewmaker, Kacie Southerland, Hadeiyah Ameen, Veronica Belles, Alex Hodson, Cassie Sprinkle, Alex Perry, and Peter Hayes.
The graphic design, photography, art therapy, and fine art majors’ work will be on display in the Marian University Theater Lobby and the hallway of Fisher Hall from April 14- May 2 and a gallery hop reception will be held in both locations on April 17 from 4:00-6:30 p.m.
This year’s group of seniors has overcome adversity to triumph with an exhibit that is better than ever. In February, Fisher Hall, which primarily houses the art department, suffered from a damaging fire. The art gallery was one of the main spaces affected by the blaze. Seniors, faculty, and staff worked creatively to find new exhibition space on campus. Rather than just trying to make due, the university built new walls; and a new plan to utilize multiple venues was born.
This diverse exhibit contains a range of art from graphic design to fine art installations. Veronica Belles identifies the importance of visual elements in her work. “A lot of my work has contrast. I juxtapose the soft, pretty, and simple designs with actual black or metaphorical black.”
Alex Hodson explains the significance of photography to her work. “Photography is a way to remember your past and record the things around that make an impact on you. Some even say that people photograph the things in life that they are most afraid to lose. I photograph to remember, because nothing will be around forever.”
The Marian University Art Gallery is located on the first floor of Fisher Hall. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, although appointments at later times are welcome.
