Transition to Teaching 

The Marian University Transition to Teaching program is for professionals who have already earned a bachelor's degree and are interested in becoming elementary or secondary classroom teachers. Our Transition to Teaching program is based on the premise that the candidate already has the content knowledge in the licensing area. If you are a college graduate wishing to change careers into teaching or if you are teaching on an emergency permit and seek proper licensure, then this program is for you!

Education coursework in the program consists of 18 hours for secondary and 24 hours for elementary (6 of the 24 are for reading). No education courses are required as prerequisites for admission; however, there are specific admission requirements for acceptance into the program.

Admission Requirements

Elementary Education

In order to be considered for admission into the Transition to Teaching Elementary program, an applicant must satisfy one of the following entrance requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0/4.0, both in the major and overall; or
  • both a bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least 2.5/4.0, both in the major and overall, and five (5) years of related work experience with groups of preschool to grade five children.  This may include working as a teaching assistant or other experiences and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Transition to Teaching Elementary Education

Secondary Education

In order to be considered for admission into the Transition to Teaching Secondary program, an applicant must satisfy one of the following entrance requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0/4.0, both in the major content area and overall; or
  • a graduate degree; or
  • both a bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least 2.5/4.0, both in the major content area and overall, and five (5) years of related work experience in the subject area that the applicant intends to teach.
