Camps Held at Marian University for Summer 2014

by Amber Ferrari | May 28, 2014

Although classes ended on May 9, there is still a lot of action in store for Marian University’s campus this summer. Marian University hosts more than 35 summer camps. Teach for America, Girl Scouts Medical Day Camp, STEM Camp (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), Todd Lickliter Basketball Camp, and cycling camps at the Indy Cycloplex are on the list, among others. These camps range from single day sessions to overnight events.

“People choose Marian University for their summer camps because of our central location in the city, our beautiful campus, and the friendliness of our employees,” said Deb Lawrence, vice president for administration and general counsel.

Here are a few you can still sign up for:

STEM Summer Camps

The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab at Marian University presents STEM Camps as an outreach initiative of the School of Education and Exercise Science. A different theme is introduced every day, giving kindergarteners through eighth graders hands-on activities that align with Indiana academic standards. Three separate five-day sessions take place from June 9-27. The first week focuses on living things, the second on natural non-living things, and the third teaches campers about earth and space. Camp Invention takes place the week of July 7 as an additional branch of the STEM camps. These opportunities allow participants to experience science in “new, different, and fun ways.”

Todd Lickliter Basketball Camp at Marian University

Todd Lickliter’s basketball camp is held June 30-July 3 and July 7-10. Campers are placed on teams based on ability and grade level. Marian University basketball staff oversees the camp helping each camper grow as a teammate on and off the court. Emphasis is placed on skills and leadership.

“It is with great pleasure that I can extend an invitation to the youth throughout central Indiana to join us on the campus of Marian University as we continue the tradition of providing a camp experience that promotes a positive attitude, individual skill development, and the passion for team success,” Coach Lickliter said.

Indy Cycloplex Camps

The Indy Cycloplex will be hosting several summer camp opportunities at the park this summer, including two week-long day camps.

"We are excited to offer opportunities for kids to come to the Indy Cycloplex and learn what the park is all about," said Dean Peterson, executive director of the Indy Cycloplex and head cycling coach. "We hope we can entice a whole new audience to visit the Cycloplex often and bring their family and friends back again and again."

The camps are scheduled for June 16-20 and July 21-25 and will include exposure to all varieties of cycling, including on the velodrome and BMX track, as well as time working in the Cycloplex community garden and other activities in this historic city park. There is also a BMX "boot camp" designed to introduce kids to BMX, the newest cycling discipline at the Cycloplex and the newest cycling sport in the Olympics.
