Grant will launch the Avancemos Hispanic Tutorial Project, an initiative to help Hispanic students succeed on college board examinations.
Dr. Jamey Norton, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, has received a grant from the Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund in June to start the Avancemos Hispanic Tutorial Project. The initiative, a series of exam tutorials, will help Hispanic students perform better on college board examinations.   "Annually there are over 2,000 Hispanic students in Indiana who take college board exams, and the majority fail to achieve competitive scores," said Dr. Norton. In its pilot year, Avancemos will assist 25-30 Hispanic high school students with language and cultural barriers that inhibit test-taking success.   Established by the Ball Brothers Foundation in Muncie, Indiana, and administered by theIndependent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), the Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund has disbursed more than $850,000 for 39 innovative initiatives on ICI campuses over the past 13 years. Marian University's project was one of five chosen in 2011 from among 26 proposals.
