Alternative Break Inspires Ministry, Service

Chris Lytle

For many students, spring break is a vacation, a chance to step away from the stresses of daily life. But last year, Mary Carper and Kaylee Bluethmann (now sophomores) embarked on Marian University’s alternative spring break to Campton, Kentucky, and their experience wasn’t exactly a walk on the beach. Marian University to Host 18th Annual Midwest Cycling Classic

by Katie Bradley | Apr 02, 2014

On Saturday, April 19, Marian University will host the 18th annual Midwest Cycling Classic, one of the biggest criterium races of the collegiate season. Collegiate races will begin at 8 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Citizen races for Indianapolis and the regional cycling community will begin at 1 p.m.

The course is approximately 2.5 miles (4km) long and starts and finishes at the Indy Cycloplex, home of the Major Taylor Velodrome. For a complete list of the day’s events, visit the USA Cycling website.

The Classic is the kickoff to the 2014 season at the Indy Cycloplex, which will include more than 20 race days on the track and USA Cycling's Collegiate Track National Championship, BMX racing, and cyclocross events in the fall.

For the second year, Marian University is partnering with the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure for this event. Come out to the Indy Cycloplex and cheer on our 25-time national championship cycling team! Food trucks and Sun King Beer will be on site for the day.

About the Indy Cycloplex

Formerly known as the Lake Sullivan Sports Complex, the Indy Cycloplex
came under the management of Marian University in a partnership with the City of Indianapolis starting in April 2011. With support from Mayor Greg Ballard and the Indianapolis City County Council, the university is leading the effort for a new era for this historic city park, the home of the Major Taylor Velodrome and a newly-renovated BMX track.

Many opportunities exist to promote health and fitness to residents of all ages, as well as to create a nationally recognized competitive cycling facility that can
host races and events in five cycling disciplines, as well as engage the community in unique ways. To learn more, visit the Indy Cycloplex website
