“It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” In Songs for a New World Jason Robert Brown captures these moments of change beautifully – the heartache and the joy, the uncertainty and the wonder of infinite possibility. The composer transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue to meet a startling array of characters ranging from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman, whose dream of marrying rich, nabs the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. With a flexible cast and a driving, exquisitely crafted score running the gamut of popular music, Songs for a New World promises to offer the perfect showcase for Marian’s student body.

JASON ROBERT BROWN has been hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and his “extraordinary, jubilant theater music” (Chicago Tribune) has been heard all over the world, whether in one of the hundreds of productions of his musicals every year or in his own incendiary live performances. The New York Times refers to Jason as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical.” This past June, Brown received his 2nd and 3rd Tony Awards for Bridges of Madison County. Best known for Parade and The Last 5 Years, Songs for a New World was his first effort and collaboration with Daisy Prince in 1995 and has been seen in hundreds of productions around the world.

The cast, consisting of all Marian University students, includes: MAGGIE BRITNER (Franklin, Indiana), DANIEL BURKHARDT (Indianapolis, Indiana), EMILY EDWARDS (Martinsville, Indiana), DIONNE “LEXI” ELSENER (Indianapolis, Indiana), Brooke Grannan (Indianapolis, Indiana), SARAH HUNTER (Perrysburg, OH), JESSIE KITE (Indianapolis, Indiana), ELIZABETH MARCH (Carmel, Indiana), JOSIAH MCCRUISTON (Gary, Indiana), THOMAS SHERIDAN (Carmel, Indiana), and ANNA C. SMITH (Milroy, Indiana).

The crew, also all Marian University students, includes: CATHERINE CARROLL (Fort Wayne, Indiana), ASHLEY ELLINGTON (Carmel, Indiana), THOMAS GUILFOY (Brownsburg, Indiana), and ANA SAINZ (Indianapolis, Indiana), with Assistant Stage Manager LUKE ELSENER (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Stage Manager CLAIRE THOMPSON (Carmel, Indiana).

Under the leadership of Director BEN TEBBE, Musical Director JAMES JOHNSTON, Set Design and Technical Direction by KRISTOPHER D. STEEGE, Light Design by DAVID LAPHAM, Sound by JASON HEIMSTERA, and Choreography by MARIEL GREENLEE, Marian University’s production of Songs for a New World is one you won’t want to miss!
