Experiential Curriculum

From the first week of class as a Freshman to the last week of class as a Senior, ALL students in the Byrum School interact with business professionals by working on actual projects to solve business problems. Here’s a summary of the opportunities that our students are required to experience.

First Year

Byrum School Freshmen are introduced to business by competing in a Business Plan Competition. Working in teams, students develop ideas for campus-run businesses and present their plans to business executives. The winning team has the opportunity to receive start-up funds and launch their business on campus the following semester.

Second Year

In their second year, Byrum School students work in teams to solve a problem facing a local business. The project varies, but students collect and analyze data using statistical techniques. They then apply Marketing and Management concepts by developing recommendations which they present to the business’ management team.

Third and Fourth Years

During their final two years of study, Byrum School students engage with business people and companies in a variety of ways. In addition to taking courses in their major, students will do the following sometime during years three and four:

  • Engage with a local business that is faced with strategic, financial, and international challenges and/or opportunities
  • Complete at least one internship experience
  • Choose to participate in an experience that provides them the opportunity to:
    • Work on a consulting project (A-Team) with a local business
    • Compete in the National Student Advertising Competition
    • Operate an on-campus business
    • Manage an investment fund
