The study of English is the study of English and American literature, written composition, and the English language. The major curriculum acquaints students with a range of historical periods and genres of English and American literature, as well as issues in literary criticism and contemporary theory; it develops students' writing skills, including those used in creative writing and journalism; and it offers opportunities to study language and film. It seeks to educate students in the critical discourse of the discipline so that they may become informed and engaged readers and writers.
