BeesleyHonored for her leadership and excellence in her role as chapter counselor, Susie Beesley, Ph.D., professor of education, was awarded the Regional Chapter Counselor Award for the Midwest from Kappa Delta Pi.

Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society in education, and Dr. Beesley has served as Marian University’s chapter counselor for 11 years. She was nominated for the award by chapter officers for her dedication to the mission and values of the society and her impact on the teaching careers of those in the chapter.

“I am honored to receive this award. Kappa Delta Pi is filled with dedicated counselors who put forth a great deal of effort to inspire both pre-service and in-service educators. I am grateful to the officers who nominated me for this honor,” Dr. Beesley said.

Dr. Beesley will be presented the award at the Kappa Delta Pi Designing the Future Convocation in November.

“It is a joy to work with such a great group of students who labor tirelessly on a variety of projects from serving as pen pals to first graders at Cold Spring School, to helping promote literacy through our Silent Book Auction and assisting at Literacy Nights in elementary schools, to sponsoring Mock Interviews for all of the education seniors, to arranging for panels of expert teachers and practitioners to serve as guest speakers on a variety of topics,” Dr. Beesley said.

Along with the Regional Chapter Counselor Award, Dr. Beesley and members of Marian University’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi received the Silver Award for their project “Literacy Alive Passport to Reading Night.” The project involved bringing families together with their children at Cold Spring School for night learning about different countries and cultures through literature, food, and activities.

“The evening provided an opportunity for Marian students to work closely with the faculty whose classrooms were being used for the various stations,” Dr. Beesley said. Activities were planned that would appeal to parents and children alike. It was gratifying to see a great turnout and to learn ways to handle a large turnout of families.”

Marian University’s chapter of the honor society has also been honored with the Achieving Chapter Excellence Award at the past seven biennial convocations.

“Our chapter is active and productive and a lot of fun,” Dr. Beesley said.
