At Marian University, service isn't just a resume builder, it's a part of our DNA. We are continuing the incredible tradition built by the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, by serving communities in need. Here are just a few of the many ways our students have made an impact:
Responding to a national crisis
The decision was made sitting on the couch watching the news, hearing about the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Harvey that hit Houston, Texas, in late August. Renee McDougal ’16, first-year Doctor of Nursing Practice student, wanted to help.
Preparing the next generation for college
Nearly every Thursday during the academic year, 45 children from Holy Angels Catholic School take a chartered bus to Marian University where they are greeted by students who spend a couple of hours mentoring them.
Learning from other cultures
Many Knights spent their spring breaks out of the classroom but still learning. Through the Alternative Break Program, students traveled to Appalachia, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico to immerse themselves in different cultures and serve the local communities.
Working with community organizations
Each Friday, they meet at 3 p.m. Student leaders give group updates and announce important news. Participants share reflections about personal experiences since the last meeting. Once in a while, happy birthday is sung and cupcakes are passed. But there's always someone who leads the group in a closing prayer. They split into small groups, each according to his or her interest, and carpool to various locations around the city.
Learning French and teaching English
Every Monday evening from 6:30-8 p.m., Marian University students taking French courses meet at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church to tutor students of French speaking immigrant families in the Indianapolis area, most of whom come from Togo and the Central African Republic.
Helping a local IPS school compete in a world tournament
Ten students from the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) have spent the last year mentoring the Cold Spring School Robotics team.
