Marian University Celebrates its 76th Commencement

Marian University celebrated its 76th Commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at St.Vincent Health Field on the Marian University campus. Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks delivered the commencement address. 

Marian University had a record 627 candidates for degrees this year, including 87 students who received the master of arts in teaching degree and 216 students who earned a bachelor of science in nursing degree. More than 140 candidates, or 22 percent of the class of 2013, graduated with academic honors.

“It is an honor and a privilege to confer a record number of degrees at this, our 76th commencement,” said Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener. “Marian University graduates in the class of 2013 represent our very best ideals and are a living testament to the courage, dedication, and vision of our foundresses. I look forward to celebrating with this outstanding group on May 11.”

Three individuals received honorary degrees during the May 11 commencement ceremony:

Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks represents the 5th Congressional District of Indiana, which spans eight diverse counties throughout the central part of the Hoosier State. As a new member of Congress, she currently serves on the Education and Workforce, Homeland Security, and Ethics Committees. Brooks will receive an honorary doctor of public service degree.

Samuel L. Odle is a senior policy adviser for Bose Public Affairs Group, where he works with clients on a variety of public policy issues involving heath care and the life sciences. He is also a newly elected member of the Indianapolis Public School Board. Odle will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree.

Jefferson W. Brougher is the founder of the Brougher Insurance Group. Following its sale in 1989, he founded International Medical Group (IMG), recognized as the leading provider of worldwide medical insurance for individuals and groups. Brougher will receive an honorary doctor of business administration degree.
