Renewal supports university’s growing research enterprise and continued pursuit of federal funding
Marian University has received renewal of its Animal Welfare Assurance through 2030, continuing a federal designation that supports the university’s growing research enterprise.
The Assurance, accepted by the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, affirms Marian’s commitment to meeting federal requirements for the humane care and use of animals in research and teaching.
Marian is one of only five universities in Indiana with a current Animal Welfare Assurance, one of two private universities in the state, and the only Franciscan college or university in the nation to hold such an assurance.
Marian first received the Assurance in 2022. Its renewal reflects the continued development of the university’s research infrastructure and of the systems responsible for animal welfare, research compliance, and oversight.
“Receiving our initial Assurance was an important step in building Marian’s research infrastructure, and renewing it shows how far the program has matured,” said Ellie Day, MS, Director of Research Compliance and Safety. “Our animal welfare program reflects Marian’s Franciscan Sponsorship Values in practice. As our research ambitions grow, we are building systems that pair sound science and strong oversight with humane care, responsible stewardship, and respect for creation.”
Marian’s animal welfare program is housed within the Office of Research Operations, Integrity & Compliance. The renewed Assurance enables Marian to pursue federally funded research, develop research partnerships, and expand opportunities for faculty and students.
For Marian, the nation’s first Franciscan Research University, the renewal also reflects the connection between its growing research enterprise and Franciscan values, including responsible stewardship, respect for creation, and the interconnectedness of life.
