A new partnership between Herron-Riverside High School and Vincennes University will expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities for students at The Grove at Cold Spring, advancing Marian University's vision to increase educational attainment and workforce development on Indianapolis' Near Northwest Side.
Beginning this fall, incoming ninth-grade students at Herron-Riverside High School will have access to seven career pathways offered by Vincennes University. The programs, delivered at The Grove at Cold Spring, will offer opportunities to earn college credit, industry-recognized credentials, and hands-on experience in high-demand fields such as construction trades, welding, cybersecurity, and pharmacy technician.
The Grove at Cold Spring is the centerpiece of the Marian University-led Riverside Education Innovation District (REID), a
$137 million investment that is transforming the historic campus into a hub for lifelong learning, workforce development, and neighborhood revitalization.
“You’re going to see hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the neighborhood that’s going to attract other enterprises,” said Daniel J. Elsener, President of Marian University. “We’re going to recreate this neighborhood walking arm-in-arm.”
As part of the partnership, students will integrate career-connected coursework into their regular academic schedules while continuing Herron-Riverside's college-preparatory curriculum. Transportation will be provided between the high school and The Grove, enabling students to participate in career training while staying engaged in their academic studies.
“With the cost of higher education being such a critical discussion, the partnership is providing a pathway to learn, gain credentials and credits that will save students thousands of dollars,” said Vincennes University President Dr. Chuck Johnson.
Herron-Riverside leaders say the collaboration gives students greater flexibility to pursue both college and career opportunities without sacrificing either path. By combining rigorous academics with technical education, students will be better prepared for higher education, workforce credentials, and careers in Indiana's growing industries.
According to Janet McNeal, President of Herron Classical Schools, “This program will ultimately prepare our students for careers, credentials, and high-wage opportunities in career fields that matter and in which they are passionate.”
The partnership reflects a shared commitment among Marian University, Vincennes University, and Herron-Riverside High School to expand educational opportunities, strengthen workforce development, and create new pathways to economic mobility for students in Indianapolis' Near Northwest Area. As programming at The Grove continues to grow, additional Career and Technical Education pathways are expected to be added.
