Inside Nursing Clinicals: Marian Student Gains Real-World Experience at the Bedside

AndrewFor Marian University nursing student Andrew Hernandez, clinicals are where the classroom meets real life.

A sophomore in the Leighton School of Nursing, Hernandez is beginning to translate foundational coursework into hands-on patient care, an important step toward becoming a nurse practitioner.

A graduate of Noblesville High School, Hernandez has long been interested in healthcare. Now, through Marian’s nursing program and scholarship support, he’s gaining early exposure to the fast-paced hospital environment.

During his fundamentals clinicals, Hernandez has assisted with patient care activities, including administering medications, assisting with hygiene needs, and observing nurse-patient interactions.

“Clinicals have gotten everyone closer,” Hernandez said, noting the strong sense of collaboration among his peers. “We practice assessments on each other and learn side by side.”

While balancing clinical hours with coursework can be demanding, Hernandez emphasizes the importance of maintaining perspective.

“Keep a balance and take care of yourself,” he said.

As he continues through the program, Hernandez is focused on building the skills and experience needed to succeed as a registered nurse, laying the groundwork for his long-term goal of advanced practice.
