Marian University Researchers Publish First-Documented Case Linking Pyoderma Gangrenosum and Hemochromatosis

Marian University’s Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-WCOM) is pleased to announce that alumnus Robert Dazé, DO ’18, and third-year osteopathic medical student Nicolas Lo have published original dermatology research in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.

Their manuscript, “Clinical evolution of atypical pyoderma gangrenosum in a patient with hemochromatosis,” details what appears to be the first documented case in medical literature linking pyoderma gangrenosum, a rare inflammatory skin condition, with hemochromatosis, an iron-overload disorder.

This hemochromatosis case study contributes new insight into dermatology and osteopathic medicine research by identifying a previously unreported clinical association. The case highlights the vital importance of aligning clinical presentation with laboratory and biopsy findings for accurate diagnosis and effective ulcer management.

Dr. Dazé, a board-certified dermatologist, and Lo’s findings expand understanding of complex dermatologic conditions while reinforcing the osteopathic medical profession’s emphasis on whole-person, evidence-based care.

The publication represents another example of Marian University faculty, alumni, and students advancing medical knowledge through scholarly research and peer-reviewed publication.
