Marian University Medical Student Matches Into Competitive Ophthalmology Residency

Sam DewittMarian University congratulates Samuel DeWitt, OMS-4, a student at the Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-WCOM), on matching into a highly competitive ophthalmology residency at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

With this achievement, DeWitt becomes the second MU-WCOM graduate to match into ophthalmology, a specialty widely regarded as one of the most selective fields in medicine.

DeWitt said his passion for ophthalmology was driven by the specialty’s unique combination of advanced technology, surgical precision, and meaningful patient outcomes.

“I decided to pursue ophthalmology because of the life-changing surgeries, innovative technology, and profound patient impact,” DeWitt said. “Ophthalmology is such a unique branch of medicine, and honestly, I had never been so gripped by a branch of medicine. I am very excited to become an eye surgeon.”

Ophthalmology participates in an early residency match and is known for its competitive selection process. In 2025, only 65 percent of applicants nationwide matched, and just 4 percent of osteopathic medical seniors matched into ophthalmology.

DeWitt’s accomplishment reflects exceptional dedication, perseverance, and academic excellence, hallmarks of Marian University’s mission-driven approach to medical education.

Marian University and MU-WCOM celebrate Samuel DeWitt as he takes the next step in his medical career and prepares to serve patients as a future ophthalmologist.
