Alexandra Tamerius, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry in Marian University’s College of Arts and Sciences, has been named 2025 Volunteer of the Year by the Indiana chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), recognizing her exceptional commitment to science education, student mentorship, and community outreach.
The American Chemical Society is one of the world’s largest scientific organizations, dedicated to advancing chemistry and supporting scientific inquiry through education, research, and professional collaboration. Dr. Tamerius’s work was recognized for its far-reaching impact on students and the broader Indianapolis community.
Dr. Tamerius leads and supports a wide range of chemistry-focused outreach initiatives, including science engagement programs for children, career exploration events, and professional networking opportunities that connect Marian students with industry partners. These efforts not only enrich classroom learning but also extend the university’s mission of service beyond campus.
“Science outreach allows students to apply what they learn, serve others, and see new possibilities for their future.”
Dr. Tamerius says that she’s grateful for the collaborative support behind the work. “This award reflects the collective effort of our students, colleagues, and university leadership,” she said. “Outreach and career engagement help students apply what they are learning while giving back to the community, an experience that shaped my own journey into chemistry and continues to inspire my work today.”
Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener praised Dr. Tamerius and the Chemistry Department for their leadership and impact.
“The outreach in Indianapolis is all evidence of outstanding teaching, formation, and service. We are enormously proud of Dr. Tamerius and the entire chemistry faculty for their mentorship, professional connections, and commitment to the community,”
In its award announcement, the ACS Indiana selection committee highlighted Dr. Tamerius’ influence on both students and the community.
“Her efforts inspire thousands across the Indianapolis area to embrace the exciting world of science,” the committee noted. “She consistently goes above and beyond for her students while embodying the Franciscan values of Marian University through her service.”
Dr. Tamerius’ recognition as Indiana ACS Volunteer of the Year underscores Marian University’s continued commitment to experiential learning, community engagement, and preparing students to lead with knowledge, compassion, and purpose.
Over the last two years, all three outreach events she has hosted alongside her colleague, Dr. Joyce Horton, have received national recognition from the ACS at its annual Chemluminary award ceremony.
