Lian Fernandez '27: A First-Gen Knight's Unwavering Path to Marian University

Lian FernandezLian Fernandez ’27 is a first-generation student attending Marian University for psychology and communication. When asked about her college journey, she said: “As a first-generation student, obviously you might not know as much, or you might not have as much support, because you’re figuring everything out yourself—but I wouldn’t have asked for a different journey. Everything I went through is what brought me to where I am now.” And we could not be happier that where she is now is Marian.

An Indianapolis native, though originally from Mexico City, Mexico, Lian faced some challenges while applying for college. Though she had a good academic background and great support from her family, next steps were largely unknown. Additionally, she knew she wanted to attend Marian University but was receiving push-back from administrators at her high school about the affordability and feasibility of her being a Knight. She described the process of applying, sending transcripts, researching, and setting up tours as responsibilities she solely took on—but through it all, her love for Marian deepened.

She only had one fear—the cost. However, Lian expressed a simple, yet effective, response to that fear: “I don’t know how, but I’m going to do it. I’m going to make it happen.” This mindset is indicative of the dedication and motivation that got her here and seems to fuel her as a student. She explained that every year she is pursuing scholarship and internship opportunities to help her afford college. Her hard work paid off, because, among other accolades, she was recently awarded Work Based Learner of the Year at the Work and Learn Impact Awards Conference. Along with all the work she put in, this was made possible by the generosity of our donor base—those selfless individuals who fund these incredible students’ Marian journeys.

Moving forward, Lian doesn’t know exactly what she wants to do, but she knows she wants to help people, help her community, and help those who are under-represented. While describing the takeaways she’s had from her numerous internships and leadership opportunities, she said: “I want to be the person I needed when I was in their position.” Without a doubt, she is exemplary of the Franciscan values and transformative leaders that shape Marian University.

Needless to say, we’re thankful to have students like Lian—her story is both inspiring and indicative of the incredible work ethic of our Knights. Join us in wishing her luck as she continues at Marian, especially because she stays busy as a Presidential Ambassador, Marian Knights Dancer, and working with Prospanica, Pathways to Careers, and the Student Leadership Initiative.
