Johnna Denning-Smith, Ed.D., director of online partnerships and professional studies at Marian University, has been elected to serve on the UPCEA Policy Committee for the 2026–2027 term. UPCEA is the nation’s leading association for online and professional continuing education.
Elected in November, Denning-Smith will assume her role following the conclusion of the 2026 UPCEA Annual Conference in New Orleans on April 17, 2026. She joins a group of higher education leaders responsible for guiding policy and governance in the rapidly evolving field of online and professional education.
“UPCEA plays a critical role in shaping how higher education responds to the needs of today’s learners,” said Denning-Smith. “I’m honored to contribute to conversations that advance access, innovation, and student-centered design across online and professional education.”
In her role at Marian University, Denning-Smith leads the design and growth of innovative online programs and strategic partnerships that expand access and opportunity for adult learners. A scholar-practitioner with a doctorate in organizational leadership, she specializes in curriculum design, enrollment strategy, and community collaboration to advance student success.
Her work includes partnerships with global organizations such as Toyota, IBM, and AstraZeneca, where she has helped deliver leadership development and design-thinking initiatives aligned with workforce and learner needs.
Denning-Smith’s election reflects her commitment to mission-driven innovation in higher education and positions Marian University among institutions helping shape the future of online and professional learning nationwide.
