Tag and Marta Birge have made a $1 million scholarship gift to support the Marian Leadership Initiative (MLI), a new program designed to equip students with the skills and experiences to excel academically and serve as impactful community leaders. The gift was announced during Marian University’s 2025 Best Ever Gala on November 14.
Grounded in Marian University’s Catholic Franciscan values, the MLI program is centered on the T.H.I.S. leadership model: Trustworthy, Healthy, Inquisitive, and Skilled. The Birge gift will support scholarships for graduates of North Central High School who plan to attend Marian University and expand leadership development opportunities campus-wide.
Advancing Leadership Development Through Franciscan Values
The Marian Leadership Initiative reflects the university’s mission to form ethical, service-oriented leaders prepared to serve today’s communities and shape tomorrow’s opportunities. By supporting MLI, the Birges are helping students access an education rooted in purpose, compassion, and academic excellence.
“Tag and Marta Birge embody the very best of generosity and leadership in the Indianapolis community and beyond. Their generosity will open doors of opportunity for countless young people,” said Daniel J. Elsener, president of Marian University. Their one-million-dollar gift to launch the Marian Leadership Initiative strengthens our mission to form leaders who are trustworthy, inquisitive, and deeply committed to serving others. This investment not only fuels student success and scholarships but also advances Marian University's commitment to vulnerable communities seeking higher education as a means to live the American dream. We are profoundly grateful for the Birges partnership and investment in Marian University’s vision to prepare transformational leaders for service to others.”
“Marian University has been doing incredible work in areas of Indianapolis that have been historically underserved by higher education,” said Tag and Marta Birge. “We feel fortunate to provide this scholarship gift, and we are deeply committed to sharing Marian’s vision of providing educational opportunities to the next generation.”
A Lasting Legacy of Service and Civic Leadership
The Birges, longtime civic and corporate leaders in Central Indiana, have been instrumental in advancing regional growth, advocating for equitable economic development, and improving access to healthcare, particularly within the Latino community. Their commitment aligns closely with Marian University’s strategic priorities and its focus on strengthening student access and long-term success.
