Marian University Expands Its Healing Mission with Accreditation to Sponsor New Residency Programs

Marian University has been awarded Initial Accreditation as a Sponsoring Institution by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), marking a significant new chapter in its efforts to strengthen Indiana’s physician workforce.

This prestigious designation empowers the university to support, expand, and create new residency programs, with a particular emphasis on primary care training in Indiana. Building on the success of the Marian University Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine—opened in 2013 and now having graduated more than 1,300 physicians, 56% of whom entered primary care—this next bold step directly responds to the state’s critical health needs, including widespread primary care shortages and lower life expectancy for many Hoosiers.

After earning their DO degree, graduates will continue their preparation through these expanded Graduate Medical Education opportunities, helping address Indiana’s low ranking in residency positions per population and improving the health and well-being of communities across the state.

Marian University students are also making a difference with an exciting milestone for Marian’s College of Osteopathic Medicine: the launch of our student-run medical journal, one of the first of its kind in the country. Click here to view the dynamic work in the journal.
