Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener delivered the annual State of the University address, outlining both the challenges facing higher education and the bold steps Marian is taking to thrive in the decades ahead.
Sister Mary Beth Gianoli opened the program with reflections on Marian’s Franciscan sponsorship and mission of peace and justice, before welcoming President Elsener to the stage.
In his remarks, President Elsener acknowledged the turbulence in higher education, citing national enrollment declines, rising financial pressures, and public skepticism. “The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence itself, but to act with yesterday’s logic,” he noted, quoting management thinker Peter Drucker.
Framing Marian’s vision as a “moonshot,” Elsener described how the university is choosing to be distinctive rather than complacent in the face of upheaval. He highlighted Marian’s strong momentum, including:
Looking ahead, Elsener detailed Marian’s 2030 Strategic Plan, emphasizing mission identity, academic excellence, enrollment growth, transformational leadership, and expanded resources. He also highlighted signature initiatives, including the Klipsch Educators College, the Witchger School of Engineering, graduate nursing programs, and outreach to K–12 schools.
“The Marian Express is on course for its destination: human flourishing,” Elsener said, underscoring the university’s commitment to preparing transformative leaders academically, spiritually, and personally.
The address closed with remarks from Dr. Britt, followed by President Elsener’s call to continue building a university that is distinctive, resilient, and prepared to serve the world.
