Small Campus, Big Impact: Josh Kling’s Story of Growth at Marian University’s Ancilla College

Student Josh Kling

Josh Kling, a graduate of Bremen High School and Marian University's Ancilla College, shares how his experience studying agriculture helped shape his future, both academically and personally.

He says one of the best parts of Marian was the small class sizes. "It feels like I am learning one-on-one," Josh said. The close-knit classroom environment allowed him to receive individual attention and build strong connections with his professors. College also helped Josh grow in other ways. He learned how to manage his time, plan ahead, and take on more responsibility.

Josh especially enjoyed learning through hands-on experiences in Marian's agriculture program. He highlights the use of aeroponic towers and vertical farming systems, which allowed him to work in the greenhouse and apply what they learned in real-time. "Watching the plants grow and learning by doing, rather than just seeing it on a screen, made a big difference," he said.

One of the most meaningful parts of the program, Josh shared, was knowing that the produce grown in the greenhouse goes to help others. "That is what got me interested in agriculture," he said. "You can grow food right in the city, even on rooftops, and feed hundreds of people fresh food. One of the most rewarding things you can do is give back."

Outside the classroom, Josh made the most of campus life. He was a member of the golf team. He also formed a friendship with his roommate, Jomar, who is from Puerto Rico. Josh had the opportunity to visit Puerto Rico and experience Jomar's culture firsthand.

Josh graduated this May and plans to attend Huntington University to complete his bachelor's degree. He hopes to enter the business side of agriculture and plans to continue helping others. He also credits his time on the golf team with helping him improve through competition.

Josh speaks highly of Dr. Knapp, one of his professors and mentors. "He knows everything about agriculture," Josh said. "He gives life advice, supports us in class, and is always there to help with important decisions."

Though Marian University's Ancilla College is in a rural setting, Josh says he was never bored. He stayed active by playing basketball, joining game nights, painting events, and more. "There was always something going on," he said. "Even in a small-town setting, I stayed busy and had a lot of fun."

Josh's time at Marian shaped his education and his personal growth. From hands-on learning in the greenhouse to extracurricular activities, he made the most of his time on campus. As Josh takes the next step in his educational journey at Huntington, he will take with him the education and values he gained through his time at Marian.
